Book Talk: Women’s Leadership Forum featuring Professor Kara Alaimo and NYU Alum Erica Viegas


Erica Viegas in conversation with Over The Influence author, Kara Alaimo.

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8,  NYU Professor Kara Alaimo and NYU alum Erica Viegas will discuss Professor Alaimo’s new book Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls – And How We Can Take It Back 


In their conversation, they will provide an overview of how social media is affecting multiple aspects of women, girls, and nonbinary people’s lives: from relationships and parenting to physical and mental health. Professor Alaimo will also delineate what users, lawmakers, and tech companies can do to solve these problems. An action-plan breakout session with time to network is included, and refreshments will be served.


This program is open to all NYU administrators, staff, faculty, students, and alumni. ***The first 100 guests will receive a copy of "Over the Influence".


Erica Viegas is Partnership Manager at the World Economic Forum where she builds strategic partnerships for the Young Global Leaders and the Global Shapers Community. She has also been named Avenue Magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40” and “Sizzling 20 Under 30.”


Kara Alaimo is an Associate Professor of Communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University and writes for CNN Opinion about the impact of social media in societies and issues affecting women.
