
Like other industries, the hospitality industry falls victim to the glass ceiling that limits the opportunities for advancement for many women. One way to overcome this glass ceiling, and also improve the retention and motivation of women staff, is by developing mentoring programs within the workplace. This paper, written by Katherine Dashper, reviews the qualitative data from a mentoring program introduced in UK hospitality industry. The interviews illustrate the gendered obstacles women experience as they try to advance their careers in hospitality organizations, and suggest that the mentoring programs provided individualized support and challenged the predominantly masculine narratives in their workplaces.
